RING OF FIRE VI - April 13-16, 2017

 

Delphi was founded on several ambitious ideals, but none more acute than the desire to fully embrace fitness in a fun and supportive environment. One of our primary goals is to organize one or more destination fitness camps each year that allow our athletes to carve some time outside of their normal schedule and environment to train in a unique, challenging and memorable environment.

 

The Ring of Fire (ROF) Tri Rally is just such an opportunity! Taking place over the three-day Easter 2017 weekend (4/13-16), and in partnership with Hill Country Multisport (HCMS), ROF allows participants to engage in training of epic proportions in swimming, cycling, running and hiking. Attendees are welcome to participate in as many or as few training events as they’d like... Or none at all! They are further encouraged to design an experience around their personal goals and interests.

  • Interested in high intensity interval training (HIIT)? Check!
  • Long-slow duration (LSD) swim workouts? We got that, too!
  • Hills? Oh, we got your hills!
  • And last but not least, if grand cycling is what you’re looking for, rumor has it West Texas is fairly spacious and with very few cellphone-wielding maniacs in sight. 

Throughout the weekend, you can choose to adhere to all or a portion of our organized training schedule or go your own way. Our itinerary includes exciting activities such as:

  • Swimming in the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool at Balmorhea State Park (voted best pool in the state by Texas Monthly)
  • Running Prude Ranch, or
  • Cycling the Fort Davis Scenic Loop, including the infamous climb to McDonald Observatory!

Additional opportunities abound for those who prefer to get a little dirty.

 

The primary purpose of the weekend centers around endurance training- but like Delphi itself, the theme of this weekend is absolute flexibility and inclusivity. You’re an adult (hopefully)... If you want to test just how far you can pedal your bike at one time without seeing another human being, knock yourself out... For those that instead prefer to see how vertical they can run in two days, there are more mountains here than you can conquer in a month... And if your idea of endurance is hanging out beside the pool refining your tanning technique in the middle of a desert oasis, we’ll be happy to tell the folks at home you were perfecting your supercompensation cycle. And nobody will be the wiser.

 

We’re multisport junkies, so of course we’ve got a strict training plan for our playtime as well. In the evenings, we’ve arranged for one-of-a-kind excursions to the McDonald Observatory Star Party, the Fort Davis National Historic Site and yes, even the Marfa Lights. And the remainder of the weekend... well.. I guess you’ll just have to come out and see for yourself!

 

Hopefully, we’ve sparked some interest in what has become a very popular tradition for local outdoors enthusiasts. Here are the main details:

TRAVEL

  • We’ll leave Kerrville all fueled-up at 5 PM on Thursday, April 13 from a to-be-designated safe parking location.
  • We'll be based out of Fort Davis the entire weekend.
  • We’ll leave Fort Davis for home at 12:00 PM (noon) on Sunday, April 16.
  • We’ll stop for a meal and bathroom break in Fort Stockton, TX in both directions.
  • The drive is about 5 ½ hours with the meal/bathroom stop. 

OTHER

  • Lodging is always difficult to procure out here, especially on holidays. And Easter is one of the most popular weekends of all- due to the insane weather this time of year!
  • All attendees must inform me of their participation by Friday, February 13th at the latest. No last-minute entrants will be accepted. Any payment must be received by Monday, February 29th to secure your spot.
  • All lodging and transportation will be FREE! to current Delphi athletes.
  • Current HCMS members are also welcome and will receive subsidized costs for travel and lodging. SAG Supporters and family members enjoy this same benefit.
  • THE TOTAL COST FOR 3-NIGHTS LODGING IS $199.
  • For participants who do not want to provide their own travel, THE TOTAL COST FOR DELPHI-ARRANGED TRAVEL IS AN ADDITIONAL $39. NO COST IF YOU CHOOSE TO DRIVE YOURSELF.
  • We will be staying at the famous Indian Lodge within the Fort Davis Park, from Thursday 4/13 through Sunday 4/16.
  • IMPORTANT!: Each reserved unit contains two queen beds, and costs for non-Delphi members are PER BED. So, couples may share a room with another couple or participant, but do get two-for-one on costs. So each couple is the same as one single. This isn't a money-making deal- we're just trying to cover costs. 
  • No food, beverages and training nutrition will be provided by the club, so participants are encouraged to arrange and transport their own.
  • Refreshment stashes (coolers) will be available to all participants for all scheduled fitness activities.
